Swimming after the Ariels is a contemporary love story about a same-sex couple learning, growing, and creating the meaning of family together. This couple is me, Cecilia (or C3), and my partner, Maya. I am the primary contributor of this blog.
A few summers ago, Maya and I attended a wedding in the Adirondacks in New York, not knowing of each other’s existence. Maya went as the guest of the bride. I went as a “plus-one” date with a guest of the groom. The evening before the wedding, I was by the shoreline of a lake when I turned around to see Maya for the first time. She was prancing down the hill in a floral, summer dress, with a relaxed grin on her face. Almost instantly, I was intrigued by her earthy, spirited essence. I felt a sense of excitement as I noticed she was coming toward me. Confidently, she stuck out her hand and introduced herself in sign language, “Hey! I’m Maya. And you’re Cecilia, yes? Someone told me about you so I was eager to meet you.”
Needless to say, I was gripped right there and then. That night, we exchanged phone numbers and three days later, I moved to Ohio for graduate school. After nearly a year of getting to know one another and Maya visiting me multiple times, I travelled to Washington, DC for a visit. The night I arrived, I signed a song by Jason Mraz, “I’m Yours” to Maya. From that moment on, we entered an exclusive relationship.
For the next year and a half, we enjoyed seeing one another nearly once a month throughout long distance until I graduated. A month later, I moved to the District swimming after love, deciding I wanted to move closer to Maya. Since then, we got engaged, are busy planning for our wedding, and are absolutely exhilarated about becoming the Ariel Family!
